“Neighborhood Impact”

PROMPT: What do you think are at least three major factors that cause crimes and
three factors that could reduce crime in a given neighborhood? (Explain your position).
Luis Castillo, a three-time All-Star once said “Our environment shapes us, choose
wisely your surroundings and the people in it.” However, in many cases people can not
choose where they want to live or where they were raised. These people have unknowingly been shaped by their environment, leading to the development of certain characteristics that contribute to crime and violence in our neighborhoods. Some of these contributing factors include social media, poverty, and the non-existence of “3rd places.”
Social media has contributed to this problem due to the increasing appeal of gang
culture. Moreover, unmonitored social media usage has fostered a sense of entitlement among children and a disregard for authority figures.
Poverty is also a major factor. Studies have shown that having a lower socioeconomic status correlates with an increased amount of stress. This stress leads to psychological disorders which increases the chances of a person committing a crime.
Finally, the lack of "third places" where children and teens can socialize outside of home and school, results in teenagers occupying adult spaces due to the lack of suitable alternatives.
To reduce these crime rates parents need to be vigilant about their children's social
media use to facilitate communication and growth in a safe environment. There is no solution to poverty itself; the best course of action is to set aside your pride and seek assistance. By doing so, you can prevent any unintended strain and stress on your children. Ultimately, as 3rd places decrease, parents should engage their children in additional activities to increase more social interaction with peers.
